Notes on songs

1.  BORDERTOWN (Ron Martin - John M. Carter)
"A song I wrote circa 1990 about my hometown on the border of  North Carolina and Virginia. Lots of references to my youth and inside politics of the times which bothered me. Although I've moved around a bit I always seemed to find myself back in my roots". (Ron)
2.  ANOTHER LOVE (Ron Martin)
"My first try at writing a Bluegrass tune in 2002. Probably reflecting back subconsciously on my failed first marriage in 1994 ". (Ron)
3.  EVERYDAY I CALL YOUR NAME (Ron Martin)
"Written around 1989 when I was with the ‘Shiloh Band’. Just a ‘good ole’ country song!" (Ron)
"The idea was to make it sound like the early Eagles and ‘Bernie’ Comolli did a pretty good job with the B-Bender Telecaster. A little tribute to Clarence White and Gene Parsons". (Marco)
4.  BUDDY'S STOMP (Marco Zanzi)
"Written in July 2008. I’ve recorded the best part of ‘Bordertown’ in my little home studio in Varese and my dog ‘Buddy’ hasn’t missed a single session, always enjoying our playing and singing: so, this one is for my ‘good boy Buddy’! Thanks to Mr. Earl Scruggs for inventing the ‘Scruggs tuners’". (Marco)
5.  MY EVERYTHING IS YOU (Ron Martin - John M. Carter)
"Written and recorded in 1983 with my songwriter mate John M. Carter about a guy who loves his girl more than anything in the world. His LOVE is his ‘everything’!" (Ron)
6.  ANNABELLE LEE (Ron Martin)
"Written in 1994 about  an American Civil War soldier who just got a letter from his girl who had married someone else". (Ron)
7.  MASON WINE/ MASON WINE BREAKDOWN (Ron Martin)
"Written around 1985 describing me and some of my mates rebellious behaviour in the 1960's with ‘Moonshine’ (i.e. ‘Mason Wine’)". (Ron)
8.  4F RAG (Parte II) (Francesco Comolli)
"I’ve written 4F Rag on the piano and it was originally conceived in two parts; the second part sounded simple and good enough to give it a chance with the guitar. My first attempt to record a song back in 1995. The 4F is referred to the common first letter of my family member’s names". (Chicco)
9.  B-STREET BLUES (Ron Martin)
"One of the very first tunes I ever wrote circa 1968-69. It projects my feelings at the time of being ‘stuck’ in my home with ‘no where to go’ having just lost my girlfriend. I lived on Burton Street (i.e. ‘B’ Street)" (Ron)
10.  COWGIRL (Ron Martin)
"Written in 2002 about the American old west cowboys and girls after seeing an old western movie". (Ron)
11.  RICH MAN (Ron Martin)
"Written in 1999 with my loving wife Suzon in mind!" (Ron)
12.  I WISH IT WOULD RAIN (Nanci Griffith)
"For many reasons, I was trying to involve my daughter Cecilia in the ‘Piedmont Brothers Band’ project. I always admired Nanci Griffith both as a singer and as a writer and this song perfectly suited my needs". (Marco)
13.  WORKING ON A BATTEAU (Ron Martin - Bret Hart)
"Written in March 2008 with another songwriter pal of mine Bret Hart. It reflects the old 19th century custom of moving goods and produce to markets up and down the local Dan River on a long flat bottom boat called a ‘Batteau’". (Ron)
"I think Ron has written a fine song; the lyrics are very authentic and sound as if they could have been written 150 years ago; a simple man reflecting on a hard life and the simple pleasures that make it bearable." (Scott Verner)
14.  MR. SPACEMAN / THE WAMPUS CAT SONG (Roger McGuinn / Ron Martin - John M. Carter)
"The Byrds have been my biggest musical influence over the years, more than the Beatles or any other group or solo artist (with the exception of Herb Pedersen) and ‘Mr. Spaceman’ merged perfectly with Ron and John’s ‘Wampus Cat’ song". (Marco)
"I’ve written and recorded ‘The Wampus Cat Song’ in 1984 with John Carter about a legendary monster creature Cat Fish in our hometown Dan River". (Ron)
15.  ONE MORNING IN MONTE GOLICO (While Cutting The Grass) (Ron Martin - Marco Zanzi)
"Written in July-August 2008. During his Italy’s trip, Ron lived in my home on ‘Monte Golico’ road. One morning Ron picked up the guitar and began to play a nice chords sequence in G while the gardener was cutting the grass and I was looking for a new  instrumental to put on the CD. Respectfully dedicated to Mr. Bill B. Keith".  (Marco)
16.  GOIN’ HOME  (Marco Zanzi - Francesco Comolli)
"In Spring 2007 I was in North Carolina to meet Ron and attend Doc Watson’s ‘MerleFest': golden moments that I’ll never forget. Written on the Jet plane going back home and while watching the Ocean below with the last image of Ron while leaving the Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport fixed in my heart and mind". (Marco)
17.  WHEELS (Gram Parsons - Chris Hillman)
"Probably the best ‘shuffle’ ever written". (Emmylou Harris)
After the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, Emmylou Harris and Jonathan Edwards, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Seldom Scene, the Coal Porters, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam, Marty Stuart, Bill Emerson, the Byron Berline Band, Mike Headrick …
18.  BORDERTOWN (Acoustic) (Ron Martin - John M. Carter)
"This song means a lot to me because it was the first of Ron’s own compositions that he played me while I was in Eden in Spring 2007 and also because ‘I was born in a Bordertown’ too. I thought it deserved an acoustic treatment".  (Marco)
